The History And Application Of Merino Wool

Merino wool is not a commonly known wool that is used to produce a high quality piece of clothing. But what is merino wool and how is it sourced, and how is it different from traditional wools?

Merino is an influential breed of sheep that is well known for its quality wool. These sheep are regarded as having the finest and softest wool, when compared to all the different breeds of sheep.

The History
An unknown fact is that more than half of the world’s sheep population are descendants from merino sheep, or from a merino cross breed. This breed originated from Spain. Sheep are mainly traded for their meat and for wool, with the merino being chosen and traded for their wool, specifically. This can also be a result of them having much smaller bodies than other breeds. Australia and New Zealand and many other countries are now considered major exporters of the wool, along with Spain.

Originally the term ‘Merino’ would strictly mean wool that is from Spanish merino sheep. But since other countries are providing high quality wool also, the term has been broadened further.

Applications & Current Uses
Merino wool is often described as springy and tightly crimped, although there are different strains that produce different classifications of wool. The different classifications can be divided into medium, fine medium, fine, superfine and ultra fine.

The wool has many different applications throughout the clothing industry. This ranges from high-end fashion to running clothing. Not forgetting that it is also widely used within skiing, hiking, cycling and mountain climbing clothing. It has become a main choice because of its ability to provide insulation and because of its superiority over other wools and fabrics.

The reason for it being used so widely is because of the properties of the wool, when compared to other fabrics. Here’s a short list of the benefits:

– A high warmth to weight ratio, compared to other wools.
– Contains antibacterial properties.
– One of the softest wool types available.
– It’s ability to maintain warmth when wet.
– Great at regulating body temperature.
– Stretches but maintains its shape.
– A breathable material.

The fashion industry has also not overlooked the additional benefits that the wool can provide their clothing. For example a large number of high quality women and mens merino jumpers that are 100% pure are very popular, for the benefits listed above.

Another reason that is often overlooked is the sensitivity of the wool. Because it is a natural fibre, it is soft on the skin and will reduce the irritation for people who have sensitive skin.

What to Wear to a Staff Night Out

Can’t quite figure out what to wear to your upcoming staff night out? With Christmas just around the corner, most employers have come up with some idea of how to mark the end of the year and revel in the festive season. In most cases, it’s a party that starts with a meal and ends on the dancefloor, at a karaoke bar or a chip shop late at night…

With such a potentially jam-packed agenda, it’s important to choose your outfit well, for practical reasons such as comfort, warmth and stain potential.

Be sure to find out as much as you can about the plans and the dress code. You don’t want to risk showing up underdressed or overdressed, or wearing the same outfit as a colleague. Therefore communication is also a must. While this is easier said than done when it comes to big companies, at least make sure to coordinate outfits among those you work closest with.

Menswear

If you’re not headed to an overly formal venue, but rather a smart casual affair, choose a pair of chinos in a subdued block colour like grey, khaki, clay or navy. Team these with a crisp, button front shirt in either a sheer colour or a classic pattern such as checks or polka dots. Accessorise with vintage pieces: a leather belt and brogues. Top off the smart casual look with either a cardigan or a smart blazer, depending on the venue.

Is a more formal shindig on the cards? In this case you may indeed have to opt for a suit, but why not jazz things up a bit by opting for a less conventional colour than black or grey? Navy, dark green and dark red can look really effective teamed with a simple shirt and leather shoes. Alternatively, if you feel that might be too much of a bold statement, choose trousers and a jacket in two different tones.

Womenswear

There is no “just wear a suit” option for women so you have to be a bit more creative with your outfits.

One of the most practical types of party dresses is the t-shirt dress. It’s a trendy and very comfortable piece that can simply be thrown over a pair of opaque tights or leggings and accessorised with heels or flats according to the venue and planned activities. For warmth, throw on a fitted blazer in a seasonal colour like dark red, dark green or deep blue. Choose a dress with detail like sequins, metallic thread or lace so you don’t have to go overboard with jewellery.

These days, it’s also perfectly acceptable to wear a pair of trousers. Ideally, black or magnolia are the way to go. Tight fitting or wide leg styles are both bang on trend. Team with simple tops in statement fabrics such as silk or velvet.

Who Needs Color

Who needs color?

I’ve been talking a lot recently about how color is one of the big trends right now in mens fashion. Well, it’s not just me – everyone has been talking about colour. -Crayon bright- color is what I heard someone describe it as recently, which is cool way of describing exactly how vivid and eye-catching the use of color is on the runways and catwalks of the world as well as in our favorite high street stores. This season is all about colour. But then there’s white. It’s a bit of an interesting dichotomy and I’m not going to pretend to really understand it, but at a time when we’re seeing a lot of colour and contrast in mens fashion, we’re also seeing a lot of designers devote their collections on outfits that are just monochrome visions of white. This is not just a summer separates thing, this is white upon white in different textures and fabrics. White as the opposite of all things colour. What confuses me a little bit is that sometimes we are getting it in the same collection – a string of crayon bright colour vibrancy and then boom, this is how we do it in white. In this article we take a look at how you can make bold statements in white.

Getting spiritual?

V magazine (which I love) recently ran an editorial looking at the white trend in mens fashion and concluded that it reflected a nod to -spiritualisation- in menswear. I’m not totally sure that I get the soulful feel from an all white ensemble, but check out this amazing jacket from Air that was featured in the shoot by Ben Lamberty and modeled by German model Bastian Thiery who is featuring in a lot of editorial work at the moment.

Snow leopard camouflage

I really love Ksenia Shnaider’s white on white camouflage effect used in the FW14 collection. This is a label from the Ukrainian husband and wife team of Ksenia Marchenko and Anton Schnaider – she’s a fashion designer and he is a graphic designer. Their current collection is kind of a blend of military uniforms, sportswear, camouflage, and white. All bang-on trend right now. Genius.

White can be wrong

An all white outfit can be a bit of a challenge to wear – any time that I’ve attempted it I seem to spill coffee or red wine, sit somewhere without first checking that it’s spotlessly clean, or order spaghetti bolognese. Apart from those practicalities, there is also the risk that you look like you have just escaped from some sort of psychiatric facility or a science fiction movie from the 1970s. All of these problems seem to have been embraced by new label MER (a collaboration from Federico Frotto Scuttie (an Italian from Uruguay) and Attila Lajos (from Hungary) – their connection is that they both studied in Vienna. Their SS15 collection is beautifully conceptual and features a lot of white on white, but somehow it screams science-fiction psycho more than street-smart swagger.

Celebrity Styling

You don’t have to look too far beyond the gossip magazines to see a lot of our favourite male celebrities effortlessly rocking the all white look. From Soulja Boy to Kanye – everybody is doing it.

Embrace your summer style god and step out set to dazzle in an all white ensemble. Just don’t order the spaghetti bolognese.
